Sharon’s Story

“The hospice helps me live – even as I’m dying.”

These are the words of Sharon, a 55-year-old patient at St Vincent’s Hospice.

Your gift today will help someone like Sharon feel comforted, cared for, and truly seen – when they need it most.

My name is Sharon, and I’m a patient at St Vincent’s Hospice. I’m 55 years old, and I have terminal cancer. There’s no cure. No more treatment options. Just time – and not very much of it.

That’s a hard thing to face. But what I want to tell you is this: I don’t face it alone.

St Vincent’s has become my anchor in a world that feels like it’s falling apart.”

Right now, I visit the Wellbeing Hub a couple of times a week. It’s something I look forward to more than I can explain. It’s a warm, safe space where people genuinely care about me – not just the illness, not just the symptoms – but me.

When I first came, I was frightened. Not just of dying, but of becoming invisible. But here, I’m treated as a person with a life that still matters.

“I was scared of becoming invisible. But here, I’m seen and valued.”

The staff make me feel seen and understood. They listen when I’m scared. They laugh with me when I need to feel human again. They help manage my pain and give me the strength to make the most of the time I have.

Eventually, I’ll need more care. When that time comes, I’ll move into the Inpatient Unit. I’ve already visited for some pain management and respite. It’s peaceful, dignified, full of light and kindness.

“It’s a strange sort of comfort, knowing where I’ll die – and knowing I’ll be cared for to the end.”

I’m writing this because I want this care to be here for others.

“My care is completely free to me — but only because of people like you. Without your support, this wouldn’t be possible. We’re relying on your kindness to keep it going.”

That’s why I’m hoping, from the bottom of my heart, that you’ll consider making a gift this summer.

Your donation could mean someone else gets to sit in the garden one more time. It could help someone’s pain be managed so they can hold their grandchild without wincing. It could make someone feel calm and cared for, when everything else feels lost.

Here’s how your gift can help:

  • Your £25 could fund a one-to-one counselling session for a patient or family member
  • Your £50 could help provide vital medical supplies for pain relief and comfort
  • Your £100 could contribute towards a day of specialist nursing care

“Your donation isn’t just a number. It’s a lifeline.”

Whether you can give a little or a lot, please know this: you are helping make every moment matter.
