Service Information Template

St Vincent’s Hospice cares for and supports people in Renfrewshire and the adjoining areas of North Ayrshire who are living with a life limiting illness.  We also support their carers and other loved ones.

In-Patient Unit

The In-Patient Unit (IPU) has 8 beds, providing a comfortable and relaxing environment for patients. The IPU includes a sanctuary for quiet reflection with multi-faith resources available, and a relaxed lounge area for social interaction. There is also a dining area with self-service facilities that patients’ loved ones can use to heat a meal or make a coffee/tea. This area can also be used by visitors and staff.

Pets are welcome to stay in the IPU as we understand how much they mean to people and how much it means to have them close. The hospice strives to create an environment that feels like a home away from home. We prioritise person-centred care and work in partnership with patients and their loved ones to ensure they remain at the centre of everything we do.

Contact us

Community Nursing Team

Our specialist nurses support patients with life limiting conditions, and their families in their own homes, or in the supportive care clinic here in St Vincent’s Hospice.

They will carry out a full person-centred assessment, taking time to listen and get to know you and your family and what is important to you.

They will help you to manage physical and emotional symptoms and signpost to our other supportive services to help you to live well with your condition.

Our nursing and medical teams collaborate with specialist teams in the hospitals e.g. Oncology, Respiratory, Cardiology, MS, Parkinson’s and motor neurone disease nurses and doctors.

They provide expert advice to other health professionals in the community e.g. Renfrewshire Enablement Service (RES) and work closely with GPs and District nurses across Renfrewshire and North Ayrshire.

The specialist nurses may arrange admission to the hospice if required for symptom control, respite stay or end of life care if this is required. The patient and family preferences for care are always prioritised.

Triage

Here at St Vincents we have recently added a triage nurse to our In-patient and community nurse specialist referral, admission and assessment process.

Our nurse Linzi will be your first point of contact upon receiving the referral, or perhaps if you call ahead first for a friendly chat.

The triage role has enhanced our service further by fostering a timely and efficient response to your enquiries and referral requests. Linzi’s priority is to ensure you or your patient are assessed by the right team, in the right place and at the right time.

If you would like to refer to this service please refer through our website, navigating the tabs above. You can fill out the referral online (although some like to print and scan) and email it to ggc.svh@nhs.scot.

Professional members of the health service can also refer through our website or through SCI gateway.

If you would like to know more about this service please get in touch using our contact form or call 01505 705365 (ext 206) to speak to our Triage Nurse Linzi Gordon.  Please note, this email is not to be used to send over referrals.

Family Support Team

Our Family Support Team is dedicated to helping you and your loved ones navigate the challenges of living with a life-limiting illness.

This can be practical support where you might be concerned about money, housing issues, organising care at home, thinking about longer-term care, arranging wills or power of attorney.  For issues like this and others, our Social Worker Isobel McWilliams is happy to help.

If you think you might benefit from counselling to help you meet the difficult emotions, thoughts and experiences of your journey, our counselling team is guided by our primary counsellor, Karen Snadden (MBACP Accred) and can support you in a held, therapeutic space.  Our counselling team offers one-to-one sessions and runs therapeutic groups through the year.

St Vincent’s Hospice For people under the age of 18, our Children & Young People’s Workers offers a dedicated bereavement support service to help children and young people, aged 2-18, to cope with the loss of a loved one.  Our Children & Young People’s Workers, Alison Provan and Jane Russell, use a range of tools, including talking therapy and play, to build relationships and support them with their grief.

Living with life-limiting illness, questions, thoughts, emotions, resistances and a range of other reactions and responses can arise.  As you meet difficult experiences, it can be helpful to talk with someone who knows how to listen and who can provide support.  You are an individual human being and we are committed to honouring your individual journey and your own expression of your spirituality.  Our spiritual care at St Vincent’s is led by Maitrisattva (my-tree-sat-vah) who is assisted in meeting the needs of those in our care by our volunteer chaplains and the wider care team.

If you would like to find out more about how the Family Support Team can support you, please get in touch using our contact form.  If you’d like to make a referral, please use our referral form.

Supportive Care Clinic

The Supportive Care Clinic is based at St Vincent’s Hospice. We offer appointments for an assessment by one of our Doctors or Nurse Specialists. Patients referred to the clinic usually have a life-limiting illness (which can include a wide range of conditions) but that doesn’t imply anything about prognosis. We support some patients for many years as well as those for whom time may be shorter.

You can be referred to the clinic by your GP or another healthcare professional, and our aim is to improve any symptoms you might have, such as pain, nausea, breathlessness, anxiety, and many more. We can also provide support to you and your family, including by helping you to plan for your future health and care needs if you wish.

At your appointment, the doctor/nurse will review your medical history and ask you questions about the issues you are facing. You will have an opportunity to discuss treatment options and ask questions before a plan is agreed with you. Afterwards, we will communicate with your GP and Hospital Specialist to ensure they are up to date.

We know that there can be a lot of information to take in at appointments, so we will usually arrange a follow up for you within a few weeks.
