Jean’s Story

Jean

Have you ever wondered what inspires someone to dedicate their life to hospice care?

Let me tell you, my story.

Jean, my mother-in-law, battled lung cancer with incredible strength. Sadly, the doctors gave her only eighteen months. Witnessing the devastation this news brought to Jean, my wife Arleen, her sister Leanne, and Leanne’s husband, Jamie solidified the importance of making the most of the time she had left.

Jean defied the odds for several years, spending precious time with her family. However, in November 2023, a fall took its toll on her health. The hospital stay was difficult for everyone. Jean was in pain and agitated, and seeing her suffer was heart breaking for us all.

Determined to be home for Christmas, Jean managed to spend the day with family, but it wasn’t comfortable. On Boxing Day, she was admitted to St Vincent’s Hospice.

The difference was remarkable. The tranquillity and warmth upon entering were a stark contrast to the hospital. Jean felt safe and comfortable in her private room. Within 48 hours, the staff had her pain under control, and she was calm and relaxed.

This is where your support truly makes a difference.

The care St Vincent’s provided was outstanding. Nurses kept us informed, and healthcare assistants ensured we had everything we needed to focus on being family, not caregivers.

There were lots of moments of joy, but one of the best was when Jean rediscovered her appetite and started eating again. She absolutely loved the desserts whipped up by the catering team.

Her favourite was Eton Mess and spoke about how delicious it was for days. She was genuinely happy and content.

The hospice allowed us to truly cherish our remaining time with Jean. They offered unparalleled care, compassion, and support, allowing us the precious gift of simply being a family again.

Sadly, Jean passed away peacefully in the early hours on 1st January, 2024, surrounded by her family. We will always be grateful to the hospice and the wonderful staff who made sure Jean had the best care. We are especially grateful to one of the nurses who sat with Jean through the bells whilst we had a couple of hours rest. Even in our grief, the hospice staff continued to support us with dignity and respect.

Inspired by their dedication, I’m now a Healthcare Assistant at St Vincent’s.

Witnessing first-hand the impact they have on families like mine fuelled my desire to help others during life’s most challenging moments.

The need for compassionate end-of-life care never goes away. With increasing numbers of patients like Jean and their families, St Vincent’s relies on ongoing support to continue making a difference.

We can’t do it without your support.

By making a donation today, you’ll ensure St Vincent’s Hospice continues to be a beacon of comfort and support for patients like Jean and their families. Every contribution, big or small, allows us to provide the care that makes a profound difference at the end of life.

Together, we can ensure no one faces their final chapter alone.

Thank you!

Phyllis
