Sharon’s Story – “The Hospice Helps Me Live, Even as I’m Dying”
As part of Hospice Care Week 2025 (6th–12th October), St Vincent’s Hospice is sharing the powerful words of Sharon, a 55-year-old patient living with terminal cancer.
“There’s no cure, no more treatment options-just time, and not very much of it,”
Sharon says. “That’s a hard thing to face. But what I want to tell you is this: I don’t face it alone.”
Sharon attends the hospice’s Wellbeing Hub several times a week-a warm, safe space where she is supported emotionally and physically, with expert care, laughter, and humanity.
“When I first came, I was frightened. Not just of dying, but of becoming invisible. But here, I’m treated as a person with a life that still matters.”
Alongside this, Sharon takes comfort in knowing the hospice’s Inpatient Unit will be there for her when the time comes.
“It’s a strange sort of comfort, knowing where I’ll die-and knowing I’ll be cared for to the end.”
Sharon’s story is a powerful reminder that hospice care is about more than the end of life-it’s about living well, treasuring every moment, and ensuring no one ever feels invisible or alone.
